Assisting small business owners in maximizing wealth and achieving success through timely sound advice

Jon Schwab

I was raised and educated in Medicine Hat. After graduating from Medicine Hat High School, I attended Medicine Hat College, and then transferred to the University of Calgary. I attained my Bachelor of Commerce degree with a Major in Accounting in June of 1981.

After university, I obtained an articling position with KPMG in Calgary. I wrote the Uniform Final Exam in the fall of 1984 and received my Chartered Accountant designation in January of 1985.

With my formal education process complete, I looked for an opportunity to move back to the Hat. I was hired as the Manager of the Bow Island office by a local firm known at that time as Flynn, Tate & Co. I spent over twenty years with this firm, with sixteen of them as a partner.

In the fall of 2005, my wife Teresa and I founded Schwab & Co. I have enjoyed the continuous process of refinement and growth of our firm. I have found working with our people and our clients most rewarding and look forward to many more prosperous years.

I have been actively involved in the community as a member of the Kinsmen Club for thirteen years and as a Board member of our YMCA for eleven years. Presently, I am on the Board of KidSport Medicine Hat and Redcliff.

Over the years, I have developed an appreciation for a healthy lifestyle and work out regularly. I also like golfing, especially the social aspect of the game. I have been fortunate to golf with a great group of guys and always look forward to our annual golf trip which we have been doing for more than thirty years.

I came to Medicine Hat in December of 1997 after completing my Bachelor of Management at the University of Lethbridge. Prior to settling here, I worked in Calgary at Amoco Canada Petroleum Company for a year and a half. The bright lights, big city, big organization was not for me so I set off to KPMG in Penticton, BC for one summer. On the drive home, I realized my love for the prairies and decided to make Medicine Hat home where I began articling at Burns Edwards Schwab. I successfully completed the Uniform Final Exam in 1999 and obtained my C.A. designation in 2000.

In October of 2005, my husband Jon and I started Schwab & Co, which has been the most challenging and rewarding endeavors thus far. Over the years’ my methodical and detailed outlook has been an asset in the setup and operation of the firm’s internal and administrative systems. I also greatly enjoy assisting my personal tax and small business clients improve their systems and make sound tax planning and business decisions.

My husband and I have two spirited boys and a bubbly young girl, so I spend less time calculating taxes and more time chasing and chauffeuring kids. I still manage to fit in a golf game or two and feed my love for fitness which has taken on numerous forms over the years; from teaching classes, to running and biking, to Crossfit and yoga, and now whatever at home workout I can do while the kids are making a mess or fighting (#keepingitreal).

Prior to children, I was an active member of the Kinette Club of Medicine Hat for 9 years and a volunteer fitness instructor at the YMCA for 9 years.

Scott Milroy

I was raised and educated in Medicine Hat. After graduating, I attended both Medicine Hat College and the University of Lethbridge to finish my Bachelor of Management.

After university, I returned to Medicine Hat to article for a predecessor firm of Schwab & Co. I completed the CA program and finished my experience requirements, and then moved to Calgary in 1996.

My experience in Calgary included work for an international accounting firm, managing the accounting department of a real estate investment company, and Chief Financial Officer of a public oil and gas service company.

I also got married and we had two daughters during out time in Calgary.

In 2008 we decided to return to Medicine Hat before our oldest daughter started school.

I spent my first year back in Medicine Hat as VP Finance for a group of oilfield service companies. I then decided a return to public accounting was going to be the best way for me to take advantage of my education and experience, so I called my old boss Jon Schwab, and joined Schwab and Co., where I am now a partner.

I have served on the Board of Directors for the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank since 2011, mostly as Treasurer, and am an active member of the YMCA.

Brandon Kobley

Proudly born and raised in Medicine Hat, where my wife and I are currently raising our two young children. I started my education at Medicine Hat College and then transferred to Mount Royal College. I completed a Bachelor of Applied Business Administration with a major in Accounting in 2007.

After completing my degree, I started articling for an international accounting firm in Calgary where I gained experience with large oil and gas companies and small joint ventures. An opportunity presented itself for us to move back to Medicine Hat to work with a smaller accounting firm, which is where I completed my articling and obtained my Chartered Accountant designation. My focus has always been with small oil and gas, retail, farming and automotive related businesses. In 2014, I decided I needed a change and so I moved over to Schwab & Co. Chartered Accountants, and as of 2018, I am now a partner.

My wife Kendra and I have two amazing children who keep us busy with their sports and extra-curricular activities. We love to camp, skate and fish, as well, I currently volunteer with the Medicine Hat Minor Hockey Association as an assistant coach, and The Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat; I also have been involved in Medicine Hat PACE Rotary and Medicine Hat Tackle Football.
